Manchester United fans devise transfer theory after Eric Bailly signs new contract

Manchester United have questioned whether the club will try to sign a centre-back this summer after handing Eric Bailly a new contract.

The Ivory Coast defender has penned a four-year deal at Old Trafford, with his previous contract due to expire in 2022.

Bailly's fresh terms means United have Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe competing at centre-back, whilst MEN Sport understands the club want to sign another defender in the summer.

Real Madrid are open to selling Raphael Varane for £60million to United, rather than allowing him to leave for free in 2022.

Pau Torres and Ben White are also players of interest, though United fans are now concerned they won't sign another defender after renewing Bailly's terms.

“I’m very happy,” Bailly told ManUtd.com after signing a new deal.

“This decision is something I didn’t have to think about, I love this club and I love playing for Manchester United. I’m happy and so are my family, everything is good.

"Now the moment with my injury has passed and I’m fit and feel good, and that’s it. A new contract is like a new challenge and I’m ready for this.

“That’s why I say the new contract shows the group has confidence in me - the coach, the staff and the players and, for me, that is very important and that’s why I made this decision to stay at the club.”

Bailly has made eight Premier League appearances this season and 62 league outings since joining from Villarreal in 2016, underlining his battle to remain fit and in form
