Manchester United fans attending Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea face rail nightmare

Manchester United fans travelling to London for the Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Chelsea are being faced with chaos on the rail lines, with long delays across the country.

National Rail has confirmed on social media that issues have emerged towards the end of the working day on Wednesday, with numerous trains being delayed or cancelled.

London Euston is experiencing problems with trains heading to and from the station, which is a major issue for Manchester United fans making their way to Stamford Bridge for the midweek cup tie.

The issues are not localised though, with problems up and down the country - which are also set to affect Arsenal fans travelling north for their Carabao Cup match against Liverpool.

A statement from North Rail said: "Major disruption between Rugby and Northampton / Milton Keynes Central expected until the end of the day.

"A broken down train between Rugby and Wolverton and a power failure resulting in signalling problems in the Northampton area are causing major disruption to trains between Rugby and Milton Keynes Central.

"Trains may be delayed by up to 60 minutes or cancelled. Trains are now once again able to run between Rugby and Milton Keynes Central via the main lines, but the route via Northampton is still blocked.

"Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day."

This is affecting the following routes:

London Northwestern Railway  between Liverpool Lime Street / Crewe / Rugeley Trent Valley and London Euston.

Virgin Trains  between Glasgow Central / Edinburgh / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Birmingham New Street and London Euston.
