Manchester United fans all make the same joke after Rio Ferdinand's Instagram post

The sight of former Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand playing football in his back garden has triggered hundreds of responses from nostalgic fans.

Most United fans made the same joke in response to a video posted by Ferdinand on his Instagram page.

The 40-year-old BT Sport pundit, who left United in 2014 and retired a year later after playing 11 games for Queens Park Rangers, left the message "The Comeback Is On" alongside the a video of him in training kit volleying a ball and adding "Neighbours can I have my ball back please".

And following a season in which Ferdinand's successors in the United defence conceded 54 goals — more than the club had conceded in any season since 1979 — fans pined for his return to the first team.

Many joked by saying that Ferdinand should return to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's ailing defence, with the former West Ham and Leeds centre-back a six-time Premier League winner under Sir Alex Ferguson in his 12-year stay at Old Trafford.

One user replied by saying simply: "Sign him up." One said: "We need you, grab Scholesy and Becks while you're at it!"

Another said: "I’d still have you at the heart of Man Utd’s defence now over anybody in that squad."

"Come back and sort that United defence out," said another United fan in reply.
