Manchester United fan 'fighting for life after being stabbed by taxi driver' in Paris after Champions League game

A Manchester United fan is fighting for his life after being stabbed after the Red Devils' victory in Paris on Wednesday, according to reports.

The 44-year-old was heading in a taxi to the city centre following the match against Paris Saint Germain when he was attacked, Sky Sports News reports.

He was with three other United fans when the taxi driver is said to have taken offence at them chanting in celebration of the 3-1 Champions League win at the Parc des Princes.

The driver reportedly pulled over and forced them out before pulling a blade on a female in the group.

The stab victim is said to have intervened and had the knife plunged into his chest.

According to the broadcaster he was left bleeding on the pavement before a car was flagged down to rush him to hospital.

He was taken to the the High Dependency Unit at the Hopital Europeen Georges-Pompidou before being operated on.

Sky Sports News was told a suspect has been arrested by French Police but the knife has not been traced.

The Standard has contacted police force in Paris for a comment.

A statement from Manchester United said: "We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game. Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery.”

A Foreign Office statement said: "We are in touch with the French authorities following an incident involving a British man in Paris on 6 March and stand ready to offer assistance if required."
