Manchester United failed transfer pursuit could come back to haunt them against Atletico Madrid

Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 after a weird turn of events saw their original draw against Paris Saint-Germain declared null and void before a redraw took place.

Ralf Rangnick will now be tasked with masterminding a route past Diego Simeone's side, and in doing so he'll come up against a player who his new club spent a long time pursuing over the summer.

Former Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier was heavily linked with a move to United earlier this year and openly confessed his desire to move back to the north west of England.

The arrival of Rangnick means perhaps Trippier will no longer be a target for United, but the England international now has the perfect opportunity to prove he's the man to challenge Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the right-back spot at Old Trafford.

In MEN’s latest Facebook Live, United on my Mind duo Omar Garrick and Ross Jackson discussed all things United, including the prospect of coming up against a player they courted for so long.

OG: “There are still a lot of players in the United squad who haven’t had the experience of winning trophies. I think if you brought in someone like Trippier he would offer experience.

“But I think with Rangnick and the way he likes to identify his players, he likes to find younger players. If United do go for another full-back it will be a younger option.

RJ: “I do take your point there and the transfer policy will have shifted slightly since Rangnick came in. Trippier being a big name with a big price tag means he’s not the sort of player Rangnick would target.

“However, Trippier openly admitted how much he would like to move back to the Premier League. He’s still got family living in the Manchester area so United would have been the perfect move for him.

“I wonder if, in the same way we talked about [Mauricio] Pochettino and how when United originally drew PSG it was going to be an audition for him, I wonder whether Tripper will view this as a bit of an audition for himself.

“This is his chance to prove to Rangnick they do need to sign him. In a way, could United's pursuit of Trippier actually go against them here if he puts that extra five per cent effort in and ends up making a match-winning contribution?”
