Manchester United explain why Edinson Cavani will be even better next season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Edinson Cavani as one of the best number nines in the world and expects the Manchester United striker to be even better next season.

Cavani, 34, agreed to extend his United contract by another year earlier this week and the Uruguayan has eight goals in his last eight games.

United signed Cavani on deadline day in October on a free but the former Paris Saint-Germain goalscorer had to quarantine for two weeks following his arrival in England and Cavani had not played in seven months, as Ligue 1 was cancelled in April and his PSG contract expired in June.

Cavani did not make his full United debut until November 24 and he started in the Premier League for the first time on December 6. Cavani only lined up in one game out of 10 in February and March and has missed 10 games through injury this season.

However, Cavani has been in prolific form of late and tallied 15 goals for United as he prepares to return to the XI for the visit of Liverpool on Thursday.

"I think we’ve seen the last few months what we can expect and what we want from him," Solskjaer said. "Next season, he’ll come ready, he'll be fit when he comes in pre-season.

"This year, he had seven months of no football to catch up, which is not easy, and he's had a couple of niggles because of that. Just the same professionalism.

"He comes in every day, does everything right. The boys look at him. He gives us a number nine position. I don't know how many games we'll get out of him but he's one of the best number nines in the world at the moment."

Solskjaer made 10 changes for United's defeat to Leicester, who moved back up to third and nine points clear of Liverpool in sixth. Liverpool have two games in hand amid their faint chances of qualifying for the Champions League and Solskjaer was not interested if they had any complaints about the team he fielded on Tuesday night.

"My job is Man United and my concern is the Man United fans," Solskjaer stressed. "What they think about my team, what they want from my team and that we come together as one and show what Man United is."
