Manchester United explain transfer strategy after £128m summer window

Manchester United football director John Murtough says creating a squad "which can challenge today but also in the future" is central to the club's current transfer strategy.

United spent £128million on transfer fees in the summer window as they signed four new players for their senior side as the next stage of their rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They added world-class potential as Jadon Sancho arrived from Borussia Dortmund and signed proven top-class talent with the additions of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo. Tom Heaton arrived on a free transfer to add further experience to their pool of goalkeeping talent.

Speaking at a recent Fans' Forum event, Murtough reinforced the transfer values currently held by the club and explained the key role manager Solskjaer plays in identifying potential targets.

"Our aim is consistency and continuity in recruitment," Murtough said. "We have a full process in place, making sure that we're planned in what we do.

"The manager always has a key role in everything that we do on player recruitment. We listen to our recruitment department and support them in terms of their thoughts or opinions. Now have increased scouting coverage globally and trust our experts in what we do.

"Squad development is never-ending and constantly evolving. We're sitting with Ole and we're talking about future plans in terms of where the squad will go and how we think it will develop.

"We want to balance squads with the right profile in terms of positions and in terms of age. Current squad has good balance - young exciting players coming through, those in the middle in the prime of their careers. Then the more experienced group - we can learn a lot from them, and they're already having an impact on some of those younger players.

"We want a squad that can challenge today but also in the future as well."
