Manchester United's new Sir Matt Busby banner inside Old Trafford was funded entirely by fans.
The Reds returned to their home ground in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday afternoon for the first time in 17 months, beating rivals Leeds 5-1 in the first Premier League game of the season.
But eagle-eyed supporters will have noticed a new banner extending almost entirely across the East Stand, where Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the first half.
The banner features an image of United 's iconic former manager Busby and carries the words, “It's glory and honour,” the great man he said. “There's nothing on earth like being a Red.”
The club have revealed that the flag was funded entirely by fans of the club, via Stretford End Flags, who have been responsible for many of the designs seen throughout Old Trafford in recent years.
The words on the banner come from a popular chant sung by United fans home and away, with the verse used in its entirety being: "“It's glory and honour, the great man he said, there's nothing on earth like being a Red. I'll follow them far and I'll follow them near, I'll follow United on whisky and beer.”
Busby was the United manager during the Munich air disaster in 1958 and helped to rebuild the club and then led a rebuilt club to European glory just ten years later in 1968 by beating Benfica 4-2 in the final. He also won five league titles and two European cups before retiring in 1969.
