Manchester United explain Mason Greenwood absence vs Watford

Mason Greenwood has missed Manchester United's Premier League fixture at Watford after contracting Covid-19.

Greenwood was not pictured in training during the week and did not arrive with the United squad at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.

The 20-year-old has started in 10 of United's 11 league fixtures so far this season and the Watford match is the first time he has been unavailable for United.

Greenwood has scored four times for United this season and all of them have come in the league. The England international is also a doubt for United's penultimate Champions League group stage match at Villarreal on Tuesday.

"Mason has got COVID, unfortunately," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told MUTV. "He's tested positive, so we'll wait for him to get back."

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have come into the attack, with Nemanja Matic recalled at the expense of Fred in midfield.

Despite praising Donny van de Beek in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Solskjaer has benched the Dutchman again. Van de Beek has not started a league game since May 23.

As expected, United have switched to a back four after starting with a back three in their last three fixtures against Manchester City, Atalanta and Tottenham.
