Manchester United explain Donny van de Beek position change vs Everton

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained that Donny Van de Beek is clever enough to play in multiple positions for Manchester United, after fielding him on the left wing against Everton.

The Dutch midfielder has been in and out of the United side in his debut season at Old Trafford since making a £35million move from Ajax in the summer, though he was impressive in the first half of United's 2-0 win at Everton.

United dominated the game for long periods, particularly in the first half, but had to battle it out in the second half and eventually secured the win thanks to Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial strikes.

Although Van de Beek faded after the break, Solskjaer lauded the 23-year-old's qualities and compared him to Bruno Fernandes after the Everton win.

Solskjaer said: "He is one of those clever players who can move into space, find space - same as Bruno, to be fair - and we want the two of them to move between the lines, get on the ball, link the play for us and find space. I thought he did well. "

Solskjaer believes United are gaining confidence after a second victory at Everton's Goodison Park this season and one that sealed a Carabao Cup semi-final meeting with Manchester City.

He added: "Of course we’re happy with the squad at the moment, Man City in the semis so that’s going to be a big game.

"We’ve had three semi-finals last year of course and is a step not far enough. This year, again as last year, we played them in the semis so let's see how we fare.

"We’ve got a big squad, we trust them, every time you win a game you get energy and it boosts your morale and belief. We played Wednesday night and we play again [at] 12.30 Saturday which I’m not happy with of course, but the energy we get from winning and going through is hopefully going to make up for it. "
