Manchester United evening headlines: January transfer plan revealed, Marcus Rashford form revelation

The evening headlines for Manchester United on Tuesday, November 19.

Manchester United January transfer plans revealed

Manchester United will only pursue deals for players that they consider targets for next summer in the January transfer window.

The MEN reported earlier this season United are open to doing business but only if the right players are available.

United are keen to avoid any spur-of-the-moment purchases after the disaster of Alexis Sanchez's move to Old Trafford almost two years ago.

As a result, the MEN understands United are hoping to have a six-man shortlist of summer targets available in January and will only sign players from that list in January if they are available six months early.

United have always maintained the mid-season market is challenging and senior club sources told the MEN the January window is 'driven by the desperation of the buyer more than the motivation of the seller'.

United are interested in Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, but concluding a transfer for any of the England internationals in the New Year would be a real test for a club even of the size of Manchester United.

Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong must decide on their futures

The futures of Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong remain in the air ahead of the January transfer window.

Manchester United have sought to tie down their exciting young talents to a new contract, with Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and James Garner all penning fresh terms.

A new deal has been offered to Chong six months before his deal will expire at United, something that seniors such as Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini were not given.

However, Chong and Gomes are at risk of being left behind by the previously mentioned trio if they don't put doubts over their futures to bed.

Within a year, Chong and Gomes have fallen from their perches as the teenagers likeliest to 'make it'. Greenwood has usurped them, James Garner is figuring more regularly and Brandon Williams has started in a meaningful league match - a feat even beyond Greenwood.

Should they not pen new terms they risk sitting on the sidelines, further stunting their development.

Rashford reveals the key to his hot form

Marcus Rashford believes the key behind his recent hot form has been more consistent game time.

Having struggled earlier in the season, the 22-year-old has scored nine goals in his last 10 outings for club and country.

Prior to his scoring streak, Rashford had netted just one goal in his previous 10 matches, and he believes the drastic change in form is down to the increased confidence from playing regular football.

"It has been a tough period and now I’m getting consistent games and playing week in, week out," he said.

"As a forward, that has huge importance. If you are not in the team and you’re in and out, you don’t quite have that confidence in front of goal.

"But when you’re having a run in the team it’s important to come up with the goods and once you start doing that it becomes second nature."

Gold hits out at Roy Keane for Declan Rice criticism

West Ham owner David Gold has hit out at former Manchester United captain Roy Keane for his comments on Declan Rice.

The former Ireland assistant manager, who worked with Rice before he switched to England, issued some harsh comments on the midfield anchor prior to the Three Lions' clash with Kosovo on Sunday.

"Where does he need to improve, where do you want me to start? His positional play, I don't think is consistent enough, he doesn't stay with runners, he's sloppy in possession," was Keane's brutal response, when asked where Rice needed to improve to become an England regular.

That criticism didn't go down with Gold, who has hit out at Keane for his comments over the West Ham starlet.

"Keane needs to get over it. Declan made his choice and I think that is what’s behind it as far as Keane is concerned," Gold told  West Ham fan site Claret and Hugh .

"It’s pretty shameful when a former professional talks the way he did about a young man. It was low, outrageous, unfair and arrogant to pick him out of all the England players.

"It wasn’t even an analysis of the boy who is 20 years old who has barely started his career in the international team for God’s sake.

"This isn’t the first time he’s done it. In a previous game, he said he should be sitting in the studio with the pundits rather than being on the pitch. Shocking! Declan has chosen to play for England and Roy Keane needs to get over that."
