Manchester United evening headlines as Traore approach is made and Smalling set for Roma switch

Exclusive: United hoping to seal Traore deal

Manchester United are trying to conclude a deal to sign Atalanta winger Amad Traore ahead of the transfer deadline next week.

MEN Sport understands talks are advancing between the two clubs with United cautiously optimistic about finalising a move for the 18-year-old.

It would represent a significant achievement for the Reds to get a deal for the youngster over the line, with sources describing it as ‘not straightforward’.

Smalling set to depart as Roma enquire about Dalot

Chris Smalling is close to completing a permanent move to Roma, but Diogo Dalot is unlikely to be included as part of the deal.

MEN Sport understands the Serie A side have made a breakthrough in negotiations for Smalling, with United keen to earn a fee in the region of £20 million for the England international.

Elsewhere, the Italian giants asked about the availability of Dalot on loan. United would prefer a transfer fee for the right-back if he is to leave Old Trafford this summer with talks ongoing.

The 21-year-old was a surprise inclusion during United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

The former FC Porto defender has been linked with a move to AC Milan this summer, and MEN Sport revealed recently that Ethan Laird has been restored to the United first-team squad.

United Champions League group stage opponents confirmed

Manchester United will face Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig, and Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League group stage after the draw in Geneva on Thursday.

United will return to Europe’s premier competition after a one-year absence during which they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.

They fell to eventual Europa League winners Sevilla, and will now gear up for a trio of tough tests in Group H.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer engineered a memorable win against PSG in the knock-out rounds of the competition when he first arrived as United manager and will be hopeful of doing the same again.
