Manchester United evening headlines as transfer news emerges and Cavani injury update

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Wednesday, December 16.

Team news including Cavani availability

United continue their Premier League campaign against Sheffield United on Thursday night. The Blades currently sit bottom of the table, having not won a match and just sitting on one point so far this season.

Ahead of United's trip to Bramall Lane, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided the latest team news, including an update on the fitness of Edinson Cavani, who has missed the last two matches after he was forced off at half-time of the 3-1 win over West Ham earlier this month.

"We have to be mindful of little strains and niggles and decisions have to be made from the kick-off of Aston Villa to kick-off of Arsenal (on January 30)," Solskjaer said. "It's 15 times 24 hours, so it's going to be very tight.

"Edinson has done well in his rehab. We still have to make the decision if we should risk him, because it is a little bit to risk him too early. I'd doubt him to be available to pick him tomorrow."

Updates on Romero and Rojo

Marcos Rojo has suffered another injury, even after not appearing for United for more than a year. The defender made just one appearance for Estudiantes on loan last season, but will not be fit until January.

Speaking to reporters, Solskjaer said: "Yeah, Marcos has just felt a niggle in his calf again. He's worked really hard to come back, he played a game with the reserves, got a knock there, worked really hard again and then felt something. So hopefully he's back in January, Marcos."

Sergio Romero and Phil Jones, who is still rehabbing from a long-term injury and has not played since last January, have also not featured all season having not been named in United's Premier League or Europa League squad, and Solskjaer provided an update on the pair this week.

"Phil should be ready by January and Sergio has been training hard as well," he added.

Four positions United will target in squad overhaul

MEN Sport understands that United have four positions that they plan to address as they continue a squad overhaul under Solskjaer's guidance.

These positions are a ready-made winger, centre-back, right-back and defensive midfielder.

However, despite spending big on Bruno Fernandes last January and the Portuguese entirely changing the team's fortunes upon his arrival, no signings are expected in the mid-season transfer window this time around.

Senior sources at the club have described the January market as 'fool's gold' and 'driven by the desperation of the buyer more than the motivation of the seller'.

United plan to have settled on their summer targets by the new year, but will only make a move in January if one becomes available.
