Manchester United evening headlines as Sancho backed for 'great move' as Reds look to enter market

Here are the Manchester United evening headlines for Monday, September 21.

United to step up transfer activity after Palace defeat

United will step up their transfer activity before the window closes on October 5 following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace.

The MEN understands that the club’s transfer negotiator Matt Judge was in contact with intermediaries after the opening day loss.

United hope to sign a new left-back - with reports of interest in Porto’s Alex Telles - and could look to bring in a centre-back in the next two weeks.

The Reds were originally planning to focus on defensive signings next summer, but priorities have changed after the Palace game.

The pursuit of Jadon Sancho will continue, too, although Bournemouth’s David Brooks, Juventus winger Douglas Costa and Ivan Perisic of Inter have all been considered as potential alternatives.

Henderson to make United debut against Luton

Dean Henderson will play his first game for Manchester United in Tuesday night’s EFL Cup tie against Luton.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who was expected to compete with David de Gea for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI this season, is said to be ‘buzzing’ about the opportunity.

Henderson came through the ranks at United and impressed on loan at Sheffield United over the last two seasons.

His performances earned him a new five-year contract at Old Trafford, where he is expected to be the future number one.

And he is now set to make his long-awaited debut in the Carabao Cup at Kenilworth Road.

Sancho youth coach says moving to United would be a ‘great move’

Jadon Sancho’s former youth coach Louis Lancaster has claimed joining Manchester United would be a “great move” for the Borussia Dortmund winger.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer, but the Red Devils are reluctant to meet €120m asking price.

United intend to persist with their pursuit of the England international, though, and Lancaster has backed Sancho to do well should he join the club.

“If Jadon was to go to Manchester United I think it would be a great move for him,” he told MEN Sport. "He would be going to play for a manager that has trust, if you look at some managers they don't trust that talent.

“Jadon will probably go to Manchester United but it will also be great for the Premier League, and it would be great for him because the club are structurally set up for success. You don't want to go somewhere they are not set up for that. The club have got a tremendous amount of history, they have got a great coaching staff and they have got players who will trust him."
