Manchester United evening headlines as Rabbi Matondo addresses transfer speculation

Here are the Manchester United evening headlines for Sunday, May 24.

Matondo focused on Schalke

Manchester United target Rabbi Matondo has insisted he is fully focused on Schalke - despite the ongoing transfer talk.

Matondo has been identified by United as a back-up plan should they fail to land Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho when the transfer window re-opens.

Matondo, who was substituted in the 76th minute as Schalke suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Augsburg earlier today, told M.E.N Sport: “Obviously there are people talking, asking me and stuff but I am not really thinking about it.

“I am concentrating on Schalke. I still have to achieve my goals for Schalke. I am just concentrating on that and we just see how things go, but for now I am just focused on Schalke.

“Hopefully I can get into the team and help them climb up the table.”

The Wales international left Manchester City to sign for Schalke in January, 2019, but has a release clause in his contract which would allow him to move to United for €60million.

Sir Alex “the best ever”

Sir Alex Ferguson was the best manager Robin van Persie played under, according to the former United striker.

Van Persie, who won a Premier League title at United in 2012-2013, wrote in ‘LVG-The Manager and the Total Person’: “Ferguson was a super manager.

“It was so brilliant how he always kept the entire squad happy and focused.”

The book centres on another ex-United boss in Louis van Gaal, with Dutchman van Persie writing: “Tactically he (Van Gaal) is a genius. “You can’t deny that, I have had managers who had their own strengths. But Ferguson was a super manager.”

Giggs: Reds need more signings to challenge

United are still ‘four or five’ signings away from becoming title challengers, according to club legend Ryan Giggs.

Giggs, who is now Wales manager, believes the foundations are in place for something special under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He told the club’s official website: “It was a shame we had to pause the season because we were flying.

“I still think we need four or five players, but we’re definitely going in the right direction.”
