Here are your Manchester United headlines for the evening of Thursday, November 5.
Mauricio Pochettino approached about replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as United boss
Manchester United have approached Mauricio Pochettino with a view to the Argentine replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.
The Reds suffered their fourth defeat in nine Premier League and Champions League matches this season on Wednesday evening, losing 2-1 away to Istanbul Basaksehir to heighten the pressure on Solskjaer.
MEN understands United have made contact with Pochettino’s representatives, with it already reported last December that the former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur manager is keen on taking over at Old Trafford.
United are reluctant to sack Solskjaer, but opinions on the Norwegian’s future could change if the team heads into the November international break on the back of a defeat to Everton this weekend.
United handed boost as Sweden boss intends to rest defender
Sweden manager Janne Andersson has confirmed his intention to rest Victor Lindelöf during the upcoming international break.
Lindelöf has found some good form in recent games for Manchester United, sitting out the Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir as Solskjaer rotated his defenders.
The 26-year-old is expected to return to the lineup for the match against Everton this weekend and Solskjaer has been handed a boost by the news Lindelöf won’t play every minute of Sweden’s games against Denmark, Croatia and France.
“With him and many others, the load level is different. Players like Marcus Berg, Kristoffer Olsson, Emil Forsberg and Victor Lindelöf have had an almost brutal fixture list towards the end,” Andersson said when initially asked about Krasnodar winger Viktor Claesson.
“We have to be very careful and responsive about those players when we gather together. Filip Helander is back, has played and done well. Victor Lindelöf is doing very well.”
Mason Greenwood left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming international break.
Southgate’s 29-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Belgium and Iceland and the friendly against Republic of Ireland was announced on Thursday, but there was no place for Greenwood.
The 19-year-old was sent home along with Manchester City’s Phil Foden by Southgate in September after breaching Covid-19 regulations in Iceland.
Foden has been recalled to the squad, but Greenwood misses out. There are, however, places for Marcus Rashford, Dean Henderson and Harry Maguire.
