Manchester United evening headlines as Gabriel Magalhaes interest dismissed

Here are your Manchester United headlines for the evening of Friday August 28.

United stance on Gabriel Magalhaes

Manchester United were widely reported to be interested in Gabriel Magalhaes, but with the Brazilian now close to joining Arsenal it’s emerged the Reds never made a serious attempt to sign him.

MEN Sport understand United's name was simply being used to pressure Arsenal into completing a deal for Gabriel despite the player agent’s claims the Gunners’ offer was the most compelling.

“Arsenal was nowhere near the best proposal [money-wise],” Guilherme Miranda said. “Gabriel chose them over more lucrative offers because Edu convinced us of the project. It’s 100 per cent because of Edu Gaspar and Arteta.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to rule out signing a defender this summer, but the club would struggle to justify the outlay with eight centre backs already on the books.

Harry Maguire sends message to United support in aftermath of Mykonos incident

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has thanked the club’s fans for their support in light of last week’s incident in Mykonos.

The 27-year-old was arrested and then found guilty of charges including resisting arrest, aggravated assault and bribery after a disturbance on the Greek island, although an appeal has been lodged.

Speaking to BBC Sport’s Dan Roan, Maguire spoke about his role as United captain and whether he could continue in that role given what has happened.

“You see a lot of reports going around and it's such a huge honour to be captain of Manchester United, something I'm really proud of.

“It's a massive privilege to even play for the club, never mind be a captain. Obviously it's not my decision to make, but one thing I will say is how supportive the club have been from top to bottom, they've been great with me and I thank them for that.”

United to ‘hijack’ Inter transfer for young midfielder

Sandro Tonali is on the brink of signing for Inter, but Manchester United have made a late attempt to hijack their signing of talented Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali, reports claim.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claim Tonali will be initially loaned to the San Siro before Inter complete a permanent deal for the youngster the following summer, with the fee reported to be €35million.

However, it’s reported United have made a late intervention to get involved in the pursuit of Tonali with the Old Trafford club believed to be open to the idea of adding a midfielder to their squad this summer.

Tonali played 35 times in Serie A for Brescia last season, marking himself out as one of the brightest young talents in the Italian game at this moment in time.
