Manchester United evening headlines as Alexis Sanchez handed Old Trafford lifeline

Here are the Manchester United evening headlines for Sunday, June 14

Sanchez may still have United future

Alexis Sanchez could be part of the Manchester United squad next season.

The former Barcelona forward has spent this campaign on loan at Inter Milan, having endured a tough 18 months after he joined United from Arsenal in January 2018.

But United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that the club could accommodate Sanchez and others next term.

“Of course there’s a place for good players and good people in this environment,” Solskjaer is quoted in the Daily Star.

“Let’s see where we get to after the season, because we do feel this squad is exciting. We do feel we’re on the way to something.

“It’s up to all the players when they’re here to do well, because there’s always talk of people coming in and out.”

Meulensteen: 'Solskjaer understands United ethos'

Manchester United are on the right track under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to former Reds coach Rene Meulensteen.

The Dutchman told MEN Sport: “I think it’s very obvious that everybody felt the need, after so much time moving away from the Sir Alex Ferguson era, that they needed to bring somebody back that understands the culture of the club and the Ferguson ethos.

“That’s why they brought Ole back, with Mick Phelan still there. They want to rebuild the club with a similar ethos to what Sir Alex did over so many years. I can understand that.”

Meulensteen, who spent six years as a first team coach at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2013, also discussed his particularly sour departure from United when Ferguson retired.

He recalled: “It’s easy to say in hindsight that things could have been done differently, but you would think, for a club the size of Manchester United, that they would have thought about it thoroughly to have a really good contingency plan in place.”

United want long-term future for Gomes

There have been no discussions over a short-term deal for Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes.

MEN Sport understands that the future of the 19-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of June, is set to be decided in the next two weeks.

There remains an offer on the table from United that would see Gomes commit his long-term future to the club.

But there is no short-term deal that would see the academy graduate stay at the club until the rescheduled end of this season.
