Manchester United dubbed the 'unknown quantity' in the race for the top four

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Manchester United's appointment of Ralf Rangnick brings a sense of unpredictability, something that gives them a chance of "snatching" a place in the top four.

After four games unbeaten, United have steered back on course and are now within touching distance of the Champions League places.

Arsenal's 2-0 win over West Ham saw them move into the top four for the first time this season but the ex-Spurs shot-stopper believes the Reds are an "unknown quantity" as the league edges towards the business end of the campaign.

Michael Carrick helped steady the ship after a dismal run of form was compiled with a 4-1 defeat, he helped united secure qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League and was unbeaten in two, beating Arsenal after holding Chelsea.

With the recent run of the Hammers, Spurs failing to strike a tune under Antonio Conte and Mikel Arteta's side being brushed aside by United, Robinson thinks last year's runners-up can secure a place in the top four.

"There’s a real opportunity now for that fourth spot. Arsenal have put a few results together, whilst West Ham’s strength in depth has been tested.," he told Betfred.

"They’ve had a couple of indifferent results, so it will be interesting to see how they respond and what David Moyes gets from his players.

"Tottenham now have a few games in hand and Antonio Conte now has the chance to work with his players and get them back together whilst they’re fully fit.

"Fourth spot is a really tough call to make, it really is. A couple of weeks ago I thought West Ham were the favourites but now they’re going to have a real test when it comes to squad rotation.

" Manchester United are an unknown quantity. They’ve had two scruffy 1-0 wins, let’s be honest. You don’t know what Ralf Rangnick is going to do. However, in all honesty, I believe that Manchester United actually will be looking at that fourth spot and believe they have a good chance of snatching it."
