Manchester United draw Northampton or Derby in FA Cup 5th round

Manchester United have been drawn against Northampton Town or Derby County in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side booked their place in the last-16 with a resounding 6-0 victory over League One side Tranmere Rovers on Sunday and will now face a trip to Sixfields Stadium or Pride Park.

The two sides will have to compete in a repay to decide who advances in the competition following a dull 0-0 first time around.

United will discover who they will face on Tuesday, February 4 and if the Rams progress then there could be a reunion with club legend Wayne Rooney on the cards.

The tie will take place in the week commencing March 2 and will be sandwiched between a trip to Goodison to face Everton and the visit of Man City to Old Trafford in the league for the fourth Manchester derby of the season.

For the first time in the history of the FA Cup, the fifth round will be played in midweek in an attempt to ease fixture congestion for clubs in the latter months of the season. There will also be no replays, so extra time and penalties will decide any matches that are level after 90 minutes.

There were concerns before the tie against Tranmere that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side would slip to a massive upset in Birkenhead, thanks to the awful pitch conditions at Prenton Park and their struggles against Rochdale and Colchester in the League Cup this season.

However, three goals in the opening 16 minutes from Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard set the tone for an easy afternoon in which United never looked in danger.

Phil Jones and Anthony Martial added to the tally before half-time and Mason Greenwood netted the final goal of the game with a second-half penalty.

United haven't won the FA Cup since 2016, when they came from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra-time with 10-men.
