Manchester United have drawn AC Milan in the Europa League last 16 in a mouthwatering tie between two of Europe’s footballing giants.

Both clubs are steeped in history in European competition despite downturns in recent years. Milan have won seven European Cups while Manchester United have claimed three, as well as a Europa League title won under Jose Mourinho in 2018.

Milan are performing well in Serie A this season and are currently second in the table behind city rivals Inter. They have been spearheaded by top-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will make his return to Old Trafford after a two-year stint in 2016-18. Ibrahimovic was part of the United squad which clinched the Europa crown, although he was injured and did not play in the final.

United are second in the Premier League behind Manchester City. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team cruised past Real Sociedad in the last knockout round, winning 4-0 on aggregate, while Milan beat Red Star Belgrade on away goals.

The two-legged tie will take place on Thursday 11 and 18 March. This season’s final is scheduled for 26 May in Gdansk, Poland.
