Manchester United defensive injury concern continues ahead of Liverpool FA Cup tie

Liverpool face Manchester United for the second time in a week on Sunday as the two rivals meet in the FA Cup fourth round.

Last Sunday saw the sides play out a goalless draw in the Premier League but, with the league both sides' priority this season, there will likely be some rotation in the starting XIs at Old Trafford.

With that in mind, both managers may be checking the treatment rooms to find out the latest fitness news on some players.

Here is Manchester United's injury news ahead of facing the Reds.

Victor Lindelof

The centre-back’s long-standing back issue has seen him in and out of United’s team in recent weeks.

He played in last weekend’s goalless draw at Anfield but subsequently missed the midweek win over Fulham.

Yet he is expected to be fit for the FA Cup tie.

What Solskjaer said: "He got some treatment [on Wednesday] and did some light training so he should be ready for the weekend."

Expected return date: January 24 vs Liverpool

Marcos Rojo

Rojo is yet to feature this season and has been ruled out of action with a calf injury after a brief comeback in United's reserves in December.

Take our 30-second Liverpool transfer survey and let us know what Jurgen Klopp needs to do in the January window.

Having been tipped to leave the club, he does not appear to be in Solskjaer’s plans.

What Solskjaer said: "Marcos has just felt a niggle in his calf again. He played a game with the reserves, worked really hard again and then felt something. So hopefully he's back in January."

Expected return date: Unknown

Facundo Pellistri

Pellistri tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month, which prevented him from making his debut in the last round of the FA Cup.

Whilst his 10-day isolation period is now up, he was unable to return in time to feature for United’s under-23s against Leicester City on January 18.

With a loan move now mooted, it seems unlikely he will make his United debut this season.

Expected return date: N/A

Brandon Williams

Williams has been out of action in recent weeks with a knock and he failed to train ahead of the game against Fulham in midweek.

It is unknown how long the injury will keep him out of action for.

Expected return date: Unknown

Phil Jones

The defender had a 2020 to forget, with his last appearance coming in a January FA Cup tie.

He has missed the whole of this season with a knee injury, which led to him being excluded from United’s 25-man Premier League squad.

It remains uncertain as to when he will return to fitness.

What Solskjaer said: "Phil is still out until probably after Christmas some time."

Expected return date: Unknown
