Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof hailed in court for chasing down thief who stole 90-year-old woman's handbag

Victor Lindelof has been hailed for the part he played in preventing a robbery in his native Sweden.

In August, the Manchester United defender chased down a thief on a bike in the Swedish city of Vasteras after he had seen the man snatch a 90-year-old woman's handbag.

The thief has now been sentenced in court to probation and ordered to pay the victim 5000 kr (£439) in damages.

Swedish paper Aftonbladet report that Lindelof was praised for his actions in the court case, with the victim revealing exactly what happened.

The victim, named Kerstin, explained she called for help and Lindelof and another woman named Jessica came to her aid.

Jessica had a photo of the thief that she showed to Lindelof, with the Swedish international centre-back subsequently running after him.

After the police arrived at the scene, Lindelof returned with a person who was identified as being the man who tried to steal the handbag.

The man has now admitted his guilt in a court case and been convicted.

Keirstin has reached out to Lindelof via the paper to invite Lindelof to lunch to thank him for his heroics.

"He was incredible," she said. "He ran over footbridge and walls.

"It seemed that he had fantastic strength and form."

Lindelof was asked about the incident when on international duty recently and admitted it was a bit of a blur.

He said: "Everything went very fast. I did not think very much.

"I just wanted to help the woman get her bag back and what she had in it. It was nothing more than that, I just wanted to help."
