Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof beats Zlatan Ibrahimovic to prestigious award

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has won the Swedish football Guldbollen award for the second year in succession.

The 25-year-old centre back has been given the Golden Ball award after being voted the best male Swedish footballer for the calendar year.

Lindelof has enjoyed another successful year at United which has seen himself form an integral part of the new set-up under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After a successful year with the club Lindelof was also rewarded with a new long-term contract at United earlier in the season, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least 2024.

Taking to social media on Monday night Lindelof spoke of his delight at winning the award. "Proud. Honoured. Humbled. Thank you," the defender wrote alongside a picture of himself posing with the golden trophy.

The United defender has become the eight player to win the award on more than occasion and could become just the second player to win it on more than two occasions if he picks it up in the future.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic currently holds the record for most Guldbollen awards, having won the accolade a staggering eleven times since 2015.

Lindelof fought off competition from past winners Ibrahimovic and Andreas Granqvist to win the award, as well as compatriots Emil Forsberg and Alexander Isak.
