Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffers injury vs Southampton

Manchester United suffered an injury scare in their game against Southampton after Luke Shaw was unable to continue with an ankle problem.

Shaw started his 11th consecutive league fixture as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named an unchanged line up again for the game against the Saints.

United fell behind in the first half but goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial restored their lead before the interval.

Late in the second half, Shaw damaged his ankle after attempting to cross the ball to a teammate. Replays showed the 25-year-old twisted his foot after directing the ball towards the penalty area.

After brief medical attention, the defender returned to the field but was substituted just minutes later after being unable to continue, with Brandon Williams taking his place on the left of defence.

Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones were the only two players in the squad to be sidelined with injury going into the game and Solskjaer is expected to give an update on Shaw's fitness in his post-match press conference.

Williams would have been a natural replacement for Shaw but also left the field through injury. The youngster was involved in a nasty collision with Kyle Walker-Peters and blood was seen gushing from his forehead.

The 19-year-old departed for further treatment and Solskjaer said he will be monitored ahead of Thursday's game against Crystal Palace.
