Manchester United defender Luca Ercolani leaves club

Manchester United have confirmed that young defender Luca Ercolani has left the club and joined Carpi FC.

Ercolani joined United in 2016 and worked his way up the youth ranks in the academy to represent the club at Under-18 and Under-23 levels.

The 21-year-old missed most of last season due to an ACL injury, using the time to complete his UEFA B coaching qualification, but still did enough for United to extend his contract by a further year in May.

Injuries have hampered the versatile defender's progress this season as well, though, limiting him to just six appearances, and he will now return to his homeland to represent Serie C side Carpi.

He has signed an 18-month deal to the summer of 2022, though the deal is subject to international clearance.

Ercolani leaves Old Trafford having made 24 appearances for Neil Wood's Under-23 side, and a further 18 for the Under-18s.

The Italian is the latest youngster to leave United this month after highly rated right-back Ethan Laird joined League One side MK Dons on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
