Manchester United defender lifts lid on 'stressful' loan exit ahead of possible debut

Manchester United defender Will Fish has lifted the lid on the stress he felt leaving the club on deadline day of the summer transfer window. Fish, 19, has joined Scottish side Hibernian on a season-long deal and could make his debut when they host Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon.

The United youngster, who spent a short spell at Stockport last season, was eager to get some more senior experience this season, but left it late in the window to seal his move.

Fish wasn't formally announced as a Hibs player until after the deadline had passed, and he admits the deal took a toll on him to get done.

“It was a stressful day, to be honest, I left Manchester at 4pm today and got here late on deadline day so it has been a full-on day but I am delighted to get the deal done," Fish told Hibs TV.

“Hibs is a massive club – everyone knows that – as soon as they approached it was a no-brainer for me to join. The club has a lot of tradition so I am looking forward to getting started."

Fish only made two league appearances for Stockport last season before his loan was terminated early and has only featured for a couple of minutes in a United shirt, making his debut on the final day of the 2020/21 season at Wolves.

The teenage defender knows he has a lot of work to do if he is ever going to make it in the professional game and he hopes to do that playing in Edinburgh this season.

He added: “After last season I had a taste of first-team football and I knew straight away that I wanted to get more of that. Coming to Hibs, there is no better place to do it.

“My (United) debut was one of my best moments in football, that was only the start though – it has given me a taste to play week in and week out. Now, I am really looking forward to challenging for a first-team spot at Hibs.

“I will give it everything I’ve got and see where it takes me.”
