Manchester United defender leaving in transfer window

Academy defender Lukasz Bejger is set to leave Manchester United this month.

Bejger, who turned 19 this week, is believed to be returning to his native Poland after two-and-a-half years in Manchester.

United bought Bejger from Lech Poznan in the summer of 2018 amid competition from Manchester City and the teenager started in all five FA Youth Cup games in the run to the semi-finals last year.

Bejger has only started three times for the Under-23s this season and his contract expires in the summer.

United hired Polish scout Piotr Sadowski - who was previously attached to Lech Poznan - to their European network in September 2017 and the club have recruited a number of Eastern European teenagers in recent years.

Slovakian Martin Svidersky is still at United, as are Czech trio Matej Kovar, Ondrej Mastny and Radek Vitek. Kovar, 20, has just returned from a loan at League One Swindon Town.

United had already offset Bejger's imminent departure with the additions of Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez from Barcelona and Real Madrid in the summer.

Jurado, 16, plays at right-back and Fernandez, 17, has already started eight times for the U23s, mainly at left-back.

French centre-back Willy Kimbwala, also 16, arrived from Sochaux on deadline day for a fee rising to €4million.
