Manchester United defender goes from hero to zero as Ivory Coast knocked out of Olympics

Amad and Eric Bailly have seen their Olympic dream cut short after Ivory Coast exited the football competition at the quarter-final stage on Saturday.

The Manchester United duo both played a part as their country crashed out 5-2 AET, having led the match 2-1 heading into added time of the second-half.

Bailly scored from a corner after just ten minutes to give Ivory Coast the lead before Dani Olmo levelled things up on the half hour mark. Mikel Oyarzabal then had a goal disallowed just before half-time as the two sides went in level.

Ivory Coast thought they had won the match when former Leeds winger Max Gradel netted in the first minute of added time, but Bailly went from hero to zero as he failed to clear the ball in his own box and gifted Rafa Mir a dramatic equaliser two minutes later.

Things went from bad to worse for the United defender in extra-time when he was adjudged to have handled the ball in his own box, gifting Oyarzabal the opportunity to score from the penalty spot. Substitute Mir then completed his hat-trick with a late double as Ivory Coast chased a way back into the match.

Amad and Bailly are now expected to have at least a week off as they travel back from Japan following the conclusion of the competition before they can return to club action.

United offered a three week holiday to all senior players involved in major international tournaments during the summer with many of them expected back in action next week.

It means the Ivory Coast duo could both be back in action late next month when United play three Premier League matches before the first international break in September.

United kick start the new season at home to Leeds on August 14, before travelling to face Southampton eight days later and facing Wolves away from home on August 29.
