Manchester United defender Eric Bailly tests positive for Covid-19

Eric Bailly has tested positive for Covid-19 and will be out for 'a little while', according to the Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Bailly, 26, played in both of the Ivory Coast's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Niger and Ethiopia during the March internationals and was absent from the United squad in their Premier League win over Brighton on Sunday night.

Bailly missed United's last two games against Leicester and AC Milan before leaving for international duty and is set to miss this week's Europa League quarter-final first leg with Granada, as well as the trip to Tottenham.

"With Eric, unfortunately he won't be with us for a little while," Solskjaer said. "He's been away with the Ivory Coast and tested positive for COVID, so unfortunately he's not back in the country yet."

Bailly has only started 14 times for United this season and has not broken the 20-game barrier in a single season for the club since his maiden campaign in 2016-17.

The £30million defender is approaching the final year of his contract and, although United have started talks over a renewal, they could cash in on Bailly in the summer to avoid losing him on a free next year.

Bailly joined United from Villarreal in 2016, when he became the first signing of Jose Mourinho's tenure.
