Manchester United defender Di'Shon Bernard seals transfer deadline day loan move to Portsmouth

Manchester United have confirmed that Di'Shon Bernard has signed for League One side Portsmouth on loan for the remainder of the 2022/2023 season.

Bernard, 22, is the second temporary departure sanctioned by the Old Trafford giants on January transfer deadline day with striker Charlie McNeill rubber-stamping his move to Newport County this morning. Bernard has previously enjoyed loan spells with neighbours Salford City and Hull City in the Championship.

He will now head to Fratton Park for his next adventure. Portsmouth are chasing promotion via the play-offs in League One this season and his arrival will boost their chances.

Bernard progressed through the Academy at United following a move from Chelsea and was handed his first-team debut in 2019 when he appeared in a Europa League match with Astana, but to this day that remains his only taste of senior action. His move comes after recovery from a recent injury setback.

It was understood that Bernard would have favoured a switch to the Championship this month, but was more than happy to settle on Portsmouth when assurances over his game-time were given. He could make his debut for the club in their League One game with Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking about the signing, Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told club media: "Di'Shon is a fantastic young player with a great pedigree behind him. He has first-team experience from previous loan spells, including in the Championship, so we know what he can do.

"It was someone we didn't think we were going to be able to bring in. We're really pleased to have him."
