Manchester United defender Chris Smalling makes transfer admission following Roma loan

Chris Smalling admits he can envisage a long-term playing career in Italy following his arrival at AS Roma in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United centre back Smalling joined Roma on loan last week on a season-long deal, but he admits he would be open to staying for longer if his current spell goes well.

The English defender was allowed to leave Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and sought out a move overseas in order to rejuvenate his playing career.

Smalling was officially presented as Roma player at a press conference on Friday morning and he confirmed that he would have no objection to staying in Serie A if he has a successful debut season.

"I think this is an opportunity that came to me that I was very interested, and I am very eager to come," Smalling confirmed.

"It happened very quickly and I think I focus on the next game, getting up to speed with training, in terms of the manager's method and then hopefully have a very good season. Then see what happens.

"To be able to have the chance at a big club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy then I can definitely see a longer term future in Italy."
