Manchester United defender Chris Smalling completes Roma medical ahead of loan move

Chris Smalling has completed a medical at Roma ahead of a season-long loan move to the Italian club.

The Manchester United centre-back has not been involved in any of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first three matchday squads of the new season and has been allowed to leave in order to gain first-team football.

Axel Tuanzebe has instead been given an opportunity on the bench this season and MEN Sport understand Smalling was told he would have limited playing time this campaign had he stayed at Old Trafford.

It was believed that AC Milan and Fiorentina both also expressed some interest in a temporary deal for the 29-year-old but Roma are now set to complete a move ahead of next week's European transfer deadline.

Smalling was pictured arriving in the Italian capital on Friday morning before images emerged on social media of the English defender undergoing his medical.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning United manager Solskjaer confirmed Smalling had flown to Italy ahead of a move.

"It’s just come up the last couple of days this opportunity for Chris, we've sat down and discussed it, at the moment we’ve got six fit centre backs, I couldn't promise Chris regular football, so he’s on the plane over now," Solskjaer said.

"I think he’ll enjoy the experience, it’s a big club, a big league, not many English players have had the chance to play in Italy. He’ll come back stronger and fitter for it."
