Manchester United defender Charlie Wellens leaves on loan

Manchester United's Charlie Wellens has officially joined Oldham Athletic on loan.

Wellens, 19, has signed for Oldham on a four-month loan deal, which will see him play at the club until 8 January 2023.

The Salford-born academy product began his career in central midfield, but he played the majority of his games for the Reds' academy at right-back last season. Wellens is a versatile talent who is contracted at Old Trafford until next summer.

Oldham manager John Sheridan reacted to the signing of Wellens on Friday afternoon and he praised the United youngster.

“Charlie’s a young player with lots of potential and has received a great schooling at Manchester United in their U18s and U23s," Sheridan said. "He’s currently on the right path to have a fantastic career and I'm sure he’ll thrive in a first-team environment.

“He’s got pace, he’s versatile and I’m looking forward to seeing him over the coming months for us.”

Wellens will be closely monitored and supported by United staff while on loan at Oldham.
