Manchester United defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on trial at Heerenveen

SC Heerenveen have confirmed that Manchester United defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will spend time on trial at the club next week.

Borthwick-Jackson, 22, spent last season on loan at League One Scunthorpe as the Iron were relegated to the fourth tier, and he has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

The left-back made his United debut in 2015 under Louis Van Gaal, going on to make 14 senior appearances for the club. However, he has not featured for United in two years after loans at Wolves, Leeds and Scunthorpe.

Now, it seems his future could lie in the Netherlands, as Eredivisie side Heerenveen say Borthwick-Jackson will be given a trial.

The club tweeted: "From Monday on, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will be on trial at SC Heerenveen. The 22-year old defender is under contract with Manchester United and was lent to Scunthorpe United last season.

"The English youth international made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 18 and came to ten gigs in the main force."

It is unknown whether the defender is on trial ahead of a prospective loan move or permanent transfer, but a contract extension at United seems unlikely after this season.

Borthwick-Jackson was not picked to join the first team on the pre-season tour, and would be expected to leave on loan next season if a permanent deal does not come about.
