Manchester United decide on transfer targets for winter and summer windows

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reiterated Manchester United will only move for the right profile of player in the January transfer window.

The MEN reported United are considering an alternative striker signing to Erling Haaland after he chose to join Borussia Dortmund and are in the market for a midfielder following injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Despite the determination to reinforce the squad, club sources concede there is a 'high possibility' United could go without signing anyone in January. United have finalised their list of long-term targets for the summer window as well.

"We're still looking," Solskjaer said. "And, as I've said so many times, we have our targets. If they become available then if it's something we want to do. If the right ones aren't there for the right money then we can't."

High-level United sources told the MEN Solskjaer would only settle for a second-choice option in a worst-case scenario. United had lined up a move for another right-back in the summer on the off-chance their £45million deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka collapsed.

United considered Juventus duo Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic to replace Romelu Lukaku in the summer but balked at their wage demands. Mandzukic recently joined Qatari side Al-Duhail.

Old Trafford sources confirmed United explored the possibility of signing three strikers and Moussa Dembele of Lyon is believed to have been the third.

Lyon issued a statement to outline their desire to keep Dembele beyond the current window amid supposed interest from Chelsea.

The French club said: "OL would like to reaffirm its wish, as in the summer of 2019, to keep Moussa Dembele. The club has full confidence in Moussa and counts in particular on him to build a successful team for the seasons to come.”
