Manchester United could ‘do a lot worse’ than to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, says Dimitar Berbatov

Sergio Ramos would make an ideal addition to the Manchester United squad if he doesn’t renew his contract with Real Madrid, says Dimitar Berbatov.

The former Spurs and United forward feels the 34-year-old has the attributes which could benefit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, though it’s not yet certain that he’ll depart the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports from Spain suggest the defender has come to an impasse at present with his club over an extension, meaning he’s free to discuss a move with Premier League clubs now for a summer switch.

While his penalties and aerial prowess make him free-scoring for a centre-back and his wealth of experience give him understandable kudos and leadership value, Ramos’ time in defence for Madrid has also been beset by individual errors and disciplinary problems.

He has missed seven games so far this season through various injuries and had four separate suspensions throughout 2019/20, en route to winning LaLiga with Real.

“I have read the reports about Sergio Ramos and there is a lot of speculation about his future. He could bring a lot of experience and steel to any team," Berbatov said to Betfair.

“Although he is 34, he is still a top player and United could do a lot worse. If he is available I can see a lot of teams interested in signing him.

“At his age of course Real Madrid are reluctant to offer him a long contract. Maybe they are arguing about money because it always comes down to money, but both sides should think long and hard about it because the grass isn't always greener."

Berbatov does not necessarily think United will move for anyone else this month after completing the deal for Amad Diallo, despite some success in doing so in previous years.

“I have no doubts that players would love to join United but January is a tough time to move. Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Bruno Fernandes did it, and turned out to be great signings, but the same was not true for others who joined at this time of year.”

United lost to Man City in the League Cup semi-final earlier this week and face Watford in the FA Cup over the weekend.
