Manchester United considering two transfer targets after Paul Pogba injury setback

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United are considering whether to enhance their squad following injuries to midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

to resolve his troublesome ankle injury he sustained in the 1-1 draw with Southampton on August 31. Pogba has only started two games since the Southampton game and his brief comeback amounted to two substitute appearances against Watford and Newcastle last month.

McTominay suffered knee ligament damage in the Boxing Day win over Newcastle and could be out until mid-February. United missed out on a midfield addition in the summer transfer window after Newcastle demanded £50million for Sean Longstaff but could recruit one in the winter window.

"Of course it's playing on our decision-making," Solskjaer said of United's depleted midfield. "When you've got two players out - Paul for a month and Scott for two - that'll gives us less options and we've got loads of games and important games.

"But still it's got to be right and that's the big point here and if it's available and possible we'll do something, yeah, definitely, we're looking at one or two."

Fred was partnered by Nemanja Matic for the second match running at Arsenal and the Serbia international is likely to stay at United beyond the January transfer window amid the absences of McTominay and Pogba.

Matic, 31, is open to leaving United this month but Solskjaer has limited options in central midfield, with Andreas Pereira primarily used as a forward. Academy graduates James Garner, 18, and Dylan Levitt, 19, are alternatives.

United sold Marouane Fellaini to Shandong Luneng 11 months ago and Ander Herrera chose to move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer at the end of the season. The club have not replaced either midfielder and the uncertainty over the futures of Matic and Pogba are bound to resurface in the summer.

Matic is out of contract at United in June but the club has the option of an additional year.
