Manchester United confirm Raphael Varane squad number

Raphael Varane will wear the No.19 shirt at Manchester United after his transfer from Real Madrid was made official.

The Reds finally confirmed Varane's move to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon after agreeing on a £34m transfer fee with Real Madrid for his signature - the Frenchman has signed a four-year contract, which means he's set to stay in Manchester until 2025.

When considering Varane wore the number five shirt at Madrid and the number four for his country France, it was widely speculated that the World Cup winner might take Phil Jones' number four shirt at United, as the centre-back hasn't played since January 2020.

The announcement that Varane will actually wear the No. 19 has killed such rumours, though.

Varane underwent a medical for United on Tuesday afternoon after successfully quarantining since his arrival upon British shores.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that Varane would be on the bench for United's opening game of the Premier League season against Leeds on Saturday, the transfer was delayed meaning the Frenchman has had to wait to make his debut.

United play Southampton after Leeds and it's expected Varane will be involved in that fixture.
