Manchester United confirm next summer departure as star ends four-year tenure

Tyrell Malacia will leave Manchester United as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this season, the club have confirmed.

The 27-year-old defender has spent four years with the club but made just 49 first-team appearances in that time.

A Netherlands international, Malacia joined United from Feyenoord in 2022 for a reported €15 million (£13 million). He was the first player signed during Erik Ten Hag’s managerial tenure.

He will depart this summer, then, after the club tried and failed to sell him last summer, later demoting him to the Under-21s. It is not yet clear where he will move next, though Serie A side Roma reportedly showed interest last summer.

Injuries have disrupted his time in the northwest, though. This season in particular, he has been limited to just two first-team appearances.

The 27-year-old played no part in United’s final home match of the season, a 3-2 defeat of Nottingham Forest.

Malacia departs alongside Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who will also leave as a free agent this summer, and striker Rasmus Hojlund, whose loan move to Napoli was made permanent on Sunday after qualifying for the Champions League.

Carrick bid a fond farewell to Malacia as he addressed fans at Old Trafford after beating Nottingham Forest: "There's Tyrell, who I spoke to the boys about before kick-off. He's been through a tough time due to injuries. I encourage you to show him your support."

The club added in a statement: “Thanks to Ty for all his efforts and the best of luck for the future from everyone at the club.”
