Manchester United confirm new squad numbers for four players

Amad Diallo has been handed a new squad number after a promising start to his Manchester United career.

After signing at the start of the year, the Ivorian international wore 19 in his first appearances for United first team, but will now wear 16 ahead of the new campaign.

The number 16 has been vacant since Marcos Rojo's departure, and has previously been worn by Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes.

Also given a new number is Anthony Elanga, who has impressed in the first team when given the chance, scoring his first goal for the club at the end of last season.

After wearing 56 for his two senior appearances, plus other squad inclusions, Elanga now gets an upgrade to 36 for the new campaign. That number was last worn by Matteo Darmian.

Similarly, Shola Shoretire gets a lower number than his previous squad allocation.

After wearing 74 for his previous appearances, the exciting youngster reverses the numbers on his shirt and is upgraded to 47.

That number has been given to other promising youngsters in the past, with Arnau Puigmal, Angel Gomes, James Weir, James Wilson and Danny Welbeck donning the shirt.

Finally, goalkeeper Tom Heaton gets no.22 in the squad after re-joining the club this summer as third-choice stopper. He replaces Sergio Romero, who previously acted as a back-up to David De Gea and then Dean Henderson.
