Manchester United confirm new signing Wout Weghorst's shirt number

Manchester United have revealed what number Wout Weghorst will wear for Manchester United for the rest of the season.

The striker arrives at Old Trafford on loan for the rest of the campaign after his stay with Besiktas was terminated by mutual consent on Friday. United have paid £2.6m in compensation to the Turkish outfit via parent club Burnley after the Clarets did not include a recall clause in his season-long switch agreement.

United do not have an option to buy at the end of the season. Weghorst scored nine times in 18 games with Besiktas after netting just twice in 20 premier League outings for Burnley last season. He famously scored both of the Netherlands’ comeback goals in their World Cup quarter final against Argentina last month.

The attacker's arrival was announced at 9pm on Friday and he will stay at the club for the remaining four months of the season, during which time he will wear the number 27.

The number has been previously worn by the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Alex Telles. It will be the first time Weghorst has worn No.27 in his entire career, having had the No.28 shirt during his first two seasons with Emmen

Speaking upon signing for United, Weghorst said: "I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.

"I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims. Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

"I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away."

John Murtough, Manchester United football director, added: ''Wout has a consistent goalscoring record across several European leagues, and his attributes will add a further dimension to our squad for the remainder of the season.

"We were also attracted by his strong personality and dedicated approach to football, which fits perfectly with the spirit that Erik is building within our squad. He has shown a huge desire to join Manchester United and be part of what we’re striving to achieve this season."

Prior to his switch to Burnley last January, Weghorst scored 70 times in 144 appearances for German club Wolfsburg. The Dutchman has also netted five goals in 19 caps for his country.
