Manchester United confirm Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna coaching decisions

Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan are remaining at Manchester United despite the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The role of assistant manager Phelan, who signed a new contract until 2024 in October, has come under mounting scrutiny in recent months but Sir Alex Ferguson's last assistant is staying at United.

Phelan does not oversee the coaching sessions at United's Carrington training complex and he appeared to get short shrift from Marcus Rashford in the first-half of United's 4-1 thrashing at Watford.

McKenna joined United from Tottenham as the Under-18 coach in 2016 before he was promoted to the first-team by Jose Mourinho in 2018.

Solskjaer is the only coaching departure, with set-piece coach Eric Ramsay and first-team coach Martyn Pert also still in their roles. Both joined United on Solskjaer's watch.

McKenna and Phelan will assist interim manager Michael Carrick for the forthcoming fixtures until United identify an interim manager for the rest of the season.

Carrick and McKenna take charge of training at Carrington, with Pert and Ramsay also present for specific drills and practice matches.

There have been no changes to the goalkeeping department, where goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis is still assisted by Craig Mawson.
