Manchester United confirm Edinson Cavani blow for Newcastle fixture

Manchester United have officially confirmed that Edinson Cavani will not be available for this weekend's game against Newcastle United.

United will be without both the suspended Anthony Martial and new signing Cavani for the trip to St James' Park, giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a potential headache up front.

The MEN initially reported Cavani was set to miss the game on October 7 and Solskjaer will likely pick between Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to lead the line, although Odion Ighalo could well play some part too.

Deadline day arrival Cavani, 33, is being forced to self-isolate due to the current covid-19 guidelines, following his arrival into the country from France. He left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and joined United as a free agent.

It means Cavani's United debut could come against his former club PSG in the Champions League on October 20th.

Martial was sent off during United's 6-1 hammering by Tottenham Hotspur in their most recent Premier League outing. The Frenchman was spotted by VAR getting into a scuffle with Spurs winger Erik Lamela and was duly shown a red card. United struggled badly after his dismissal, conceding four goals to compound a miserable afternoon.

Eric Bailly is expected to be fit for United's trip to Tyneside despite being withdrawn due to fatigue while on international duty with Ivory Coast last week.
