Manchester United confident of signing Bruno Fernandes after ‘significant breakthrough’ in Sporting talks

Manchester United are close to completing the signing of Bruno Fernandes after a ‘significant breakthrough’ in talks.

United are confident a deal is on the verge of being agreed, subject to personal terms.

The Old Trafford club have been locked in talks for the midfielder - and refused to back away, despite late interest from Barcelona.

It’s understood final figures are still to be confirmed - but sources insist “significant progress” has been made tonight and the 25-year-old is expected to be Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s first signing of the window.

United will pay €55million (£46.5m) up front, plus €10m in achievable add-ons.

A further €15m will be payable based on Fernandes’ personal achievements such as winning the Ballon d’Or.

Fernandes will sign a four-and-a-half year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

It is a victory for United who refused to meet Sporting’s demands of €80m.

Fernandes is due to arrive at Carrington to undergo a medical, while personal terms are still to be agreed.
