Manchester United 'completely condemn' vile abuse of Jesse Lingard in video after investigation launched

Manchester United have opened an investigation after footage emerged of midfielder Jesse Lingard being subjected to a torrent of foul-mouthed abuse following the club’s 3-0 FA Cup victory over Derby at Pride Park.

The abuse was directed at the 27-year-old as he signed autographs before boarding the team bus, with insults such as “Jesse you’re s**t, Jesse you’re a w****r, Jesse f*** off” clearly audible.

A United spokesperson said the club “completely condemns” the abuse and are now expected to contact Derby County to see if the Championship side can help identify individuals. Those responsible could face severe sanctions.

Lingard’s teammate, Luke Shaw, later emerged at the front of the bus as he attempted to confront supporters over their repeated abuse of the England international.

A statement released by Derbyshire Police read: ”We’re aware of the video that was taken outside Pride Park following last night’s game between Derby and Manchester United and enquiries are ongoing.”

The incident comes less than 24 hours after Eric Dier climbed into the stands and became involved in an altercation with a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, who had been shouting verbal abuse at both the midfielder and his brother, Patrick.
