Manchester United caretaker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopeful of 'good news' on star contracts

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful he will receive ‘good news’ regarding the long-term futures of some of his key Manchester United players in the coming weeks.

United remain in contract negotiations with the representatives of goalkeeper David de Gea and forward Anthony Martial.

The club have triggered one-year extension clauses in the contracts of both players, extending their stays at Old Trafford until the summer of 2020.

However, caretaker manager Solskjaer is keen for the club to tie the pair down to longer-term deals and believes headway is being made.

“I think the club’s making progress but I leave that to the right people to do that,” he said.

“I don’t know really how far we are away from it but hopefully we’re going to have some good news in the coming weeks.”

Though De Gea and Martial’s deals are up next year, three other United players will see their contracts expire this summer.

Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young’s one-year extensions were activated last year. All three could be lost on free transfers this summer unless new terms are agreed.

Meanwhile, United are yet to take up extension options on Phil Jones and club captain Antonio Valencia.
