Manchester United captain Harry Maguire picked the wrong target with England celebration

Harry Maguire probably picked the wrong target when he celebrated scoring for England at Wembley by putting his fingers to his ears to block out the noise.

The Manchester United captain didn't really elaborate on his celebration after the routine 5-0 win on Friday night, other than saying it "just came naturally to me", but in truth it didn't really need much explaining.

Maguire has been on the receiving end of plenty of his criticism recently, particularly between the October and November international breaks.

He was rushed back into the team to face Leicester City on October 16 after just one training session, having missed three weeks with a calf injury. He was poor at the King Power Stadium, looking short of fitness and affected by the heckles that came his way from supporters of his former club.

That defeat in the East Midlands was the start of a disastrous three weeks for United. The 3-2 win against Atalanta at Old Trafford and the 3-0 success at Tottenham just about averted a complete meltdown, but in six games between the international breaks United won just twice, lost three Premier League games and conceded an eye-watering 15 goals.

As captain of the club and an £80million centre back in a team that has kept two clean sheets all season, it's hardly surprising Maguire has been criticised. He started all six of those games but probably didn't warrant selection after his poor performances against Leicester City and Liverpool.

The 28-year-old earned plenty of plaudits for his performances in the second half of last season with United, but over the last five months, it's clear his best performances have come in an England shirt.

He was magnificent in the European Championship and although the win against Albania was routine, Maguire was commanding defensively and good on the ball, happy to drive forward and pose problems too. So nobody watching him play for England needs to be silenced.

The real issue is why he's struggled to replicate that form for United this season. That is not entirely down to the player. He's clearly playing his club football in a team with significant structural flaws this season. In 16 games there have been just two clean sheets and United's defence has been exposed far too often, the gaps between defence and midfield and midfield and attack completely out of kilter.

It's also obvious that Gareth Southgate is coaxing the best performances out of Maguire at the moment. The United captain has performed well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before and his problems at Old Trafford this season are probably more tactical than anything else, but he is responding to Southgate, who revealed how he'd coaxed a good performance out of Maguire on Friday night.

"Is he a Hulk Hogan fan? I don't know what the celebration was for. He's a fabulous player, two months ago he was in the Euros team of the tournament," said Southgate.

"He's rushed back because he's the sort of player who has a huge conscience to help his club. You get lots of players who hide in the treatment room when pressure is on. He hasn't done that and I have massive respect for that but you can go into matches not fully fit and you're judged as fully fit in those moments.

"I've had a good chat with him this week, reminded him how important he is for us, he's been able to switch focus and have a few days on the training pitch which has probably helped, and his performance was very good."

Nobody can dispute any of that from Southgate and it's true Maguire has never shirked a challenge for United, but he must surely accept he's been below form for his club recently and that results are simply not good enough.

He clearly feels some out of has been over the top and Roy Keane's reaction to his celebration probably proved that, but what Maguire really needs to do to silence his critics is start playing for United with the same authority that he is doing for England.
