Manchester United captain Harry Maguire lifts the lid on relationship with FIFA boss Gianni Infantino

Harry Maguire has revealed he has been in contact with FIFA president Gianni Infantino to discuss potential developments within football.

The FIFA boss sought out the Manchester United skipper earlier this season and the pair have exchanged e-mails to discuss their thoughts on the game.

Maguire has been at the forefront of a movement that's seen players taking on greater social responsibility since the first lockdown and he arranged for food parcels to be delivered back home in Sheffield last year.

The United defender has also worked closely with Liverpool counterpart Jordan Henderson on the #PlayersTogether movement that raised millions for the NHS.

Maguire is now having an influence on the game on the pitch as well, with Infantino seeking out his opinion on matters, something the United captain is only too happy to provide.

"We spoke over emails. It's great that he [Infantino] got in touch with me, and it's something I appreciate," Maguire told ESPN.

"He is a highly respected man, and obviously someone I respect. It's really nice for him to get in touch and speak to me about ways that we can develop football.

"First and foremost, I respect whatever he has to say to me. He's the boss, he's the one who tells me or explains what's going on. But obviously, if he asks me a question, I'd answer with my honest opinion. My opinion is obviously one of a million peoples' opinion, but if I could have got tiny, tiny input, then that would be important."

Player power was to the fore of the doomed European Super League project as well, with footballers from clubs involved speaking out before their employers waved the white flag.

United were on the founding members of the ESL but withdrew from the project less than 48 hours after it was launched following a fierce backlash.

While Maguire wasn't speaking about the ESL directly, he believes it's important players have a voice in the game.

"I think it's really important that footballers have a voice in the football," he said.. "It's really important that fans have a voice in football and owners, too. We're all in this together, we all love the sport, we all have great passion for the sport and it's important that everyone has a voice.

"I think playing for Manchester United, you have a big profile whether you are captain or not. Obviously I'm the captain of the club and I'm really proud of that, but there are all the big players and other big voices in football who I'm sure will have a big input."
