Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia apologises for liking anti-Jose Mourinho Instagram post

Antonio Valencia has apologised after liking an Instagram post calling for Jose Mourinho to be sacked as manager of Manchester United.

Valencia, United’s club captain, appeared to endorse a post made by fan account ‘teamvalencia25’ which said that Mourinho must be dismissed after Tuesday night’s goalless Champions League draw with Valencia.

“I’m not even surprised by the outcome of this game,” the post read, alongside images of Valencia in action on Tuesday night.

“I always look forward to our games but recent Mourinho has made watching us a punishment now. Something needs to change. It’s time for Mourinho to go.”

Valencia was dropped by Mourinho for Saturday’s defeat at West Ham United amid reports of a falling-out with his manager but then returned to the starting line-up at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old apologised for liking the post in question on Wednesday morning, claiming not have read it before reiterating his support of Mourinho.

“Yesterday, I liked a post on Instagram without reading the text that accompanied the picture,” Valencia tweeted.

“These are not my views and I apologise for this. I am fully supportive of the manager and my teammates. We are all giving our everything to improve the results.”
